Excerpt from an online statement of significance
Bungaree was one of the best-known Aboriginal men in the settlement
of Sydney in the 1820s. When ships dropped anchor in Sydney harbour Bungaree arrived in his fishing boat to welcome newcomers to his country, graciously raising his bicorn hat in greeting. This lithograph, based on the painting by August Earle, is significant for its affectionate portrait of Bungaree and as the first lithograph produced in Australia.
